How do I find my family coat of arms?
Trace your direct line first, then check the official records. You have a family coat of arms only if a direct ancestor was granted arms and you descend from that ancestor in the line the grant follows. A surname search cannot tell you this, because it matches names, not ancestors.
Build your family tree, noting where each ancestor lived, then check that country's register. The College of Arms keeps the records for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. In Scotland, arms are recorded in the [Public Register of All Arms and Bearings](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Register_of_All_Arms_and_Bearings_in_Scotland), which the Court of the Lord Lyon has kept since 1672.
Finding nothing is normal, since most families never had a grant. You can still design new arms in the coat of arms maker, or see how to make a coat of arms official.
