Rampant
Rampant describes an animal rearing up in profile on its hind legs, with its forepaws raised as if to strike. It is the most common pose for a heraldic lion. Unless the blazon says otherwise, a rampant beast faces dexter, the viewer's left.
The royal arms of Scotland are Or, a lion rampant gules within a double tressure, a red lion on gold so well known that the whole coat is called the Lion Rampant. The Kingdom of León used a purple lion rampant on white. Add guardant when the head turns to face you, or regardant when it looks back over its shoulder. A griffin in this pose is called segreant.
The coat of arms maker starts with a gold lion rampant, and the Beasts group on the Charges tab also has a lion rampant guardant, a lion rampant regardant and a horse rampant. Flip one to face sinister, or compare the pose with passant.
