Supporters

Supporters are the figures placed on either side of a shield, drawn as if holding it up. They are usually animals, monsters or people. In the United Kingdom they are a mark of special royal favour, granted mostly to peers, senior knights, some Scottish clan chiefs and certain public bodies.

The royal arms of the United Kingdom have a crowned English lion on the dexter side and a chained Scottish unicorn on the sinister side. Supporters can tell a local story too: Cornwall County Council was granted a fisherman and a tin miner. They usually stand on a compartment under the shield.

The coat of arms maker has room at both sides of the shield for supporters. Pick a beast from the Charges tab, such as a lion rampant, a griffin, a unicorn or the bear supporter, place it beside the shield, then duplicate it and flip the copy so the pair face each other.
