Purpure

Purpure is the heraldic tincture for purple. It counts as one of the five main colours in English heraldry, though it has always been rarer than the others. In engravings Purpure is shown with diagonal lines running from the upper right to the lower left as you look at the shield.

The oldest famous example is the Kingdom of León in Spain: Argent, a lion rampant purpure, a purple lion on a white field. Early painters used a greyer or redder shade than we would call purple today. French heraldry often leaves purpure out of the common colours altogether. Old symbolism links it with the amethyst and with temperance.

You will find Purpure by name in the color picker of the coat of arms maker, next to Murrey, a reddish mulberry tone. Use it with a metal like Argent or Or, the same way León does.
